ALCOHOL
Alcohol is a narcotic. The chemical name for alcohol is ethanol (C2H5OH). Alcohol is the most commonly used drug in western society. Because it’s so common, we easily forget about the risks. If you drink a little alcohol, you become more active and you dare to do more. If you drink more, you will pay less attention. You also react slower.
With a larger amount of alcohol, your responsiveness decreases. You hear and see less well. At the same time you have more confidence, so you dare more. This sometimes creates dangerous situations, for example in traffic.
If you drink more alcohol, you have less control over your movements. You stagger when you walk and talking becomes more difficult. Because of this you often forget what has been said and happened. The following day you may suffer from headaches and feel sick.
Too high a dose of alcohol may cause your respiration and heartbeat to slow down or stop completely. This may lead to coma or death.
The same amount of alcohol works differently for one person than for the other. That’s because of your weight, stress and level of fatigue. The speed at which you drink also plays a role, just like your gender. Young people, the elderly and women are often less resistant to alcohol.

Alcohol causes cancer!
Drinking alcohol increases the risk of cancer. Drinking alcohol doesn’t mean that you’ll definitely get cancer, but the risk is higher the more alcohol you drink.
People might talk about some alcoholic drinks being better or worse for you than others. But all types of alcohol increase the risk of cancer – as it’s the alcohol itself that causes damage, even in small amounts.
So the more you can cut down on alcohol the more you can reduce your risk of cancer.
Drinking less alcohol has lots of other health benefits, too. You can reduce your risk of accidents, high blood pressure and liver disease by cutting back.
Drinking alcohol causes 7 different types of cancer. This includes:
- Breast cancer and bowel cancer (two of the most common types),
- Mouth cancer,
- Some types of throat cancer: oesophagus (food pipe), larynx (voice box) and pharynx (upper throat),
- Liver cancer.
Drug info & drug testing
Do you use other drugs besides alcohol? Inform yourself well about the risks and how you can reduce them. Find more info on the UNITY website.
One of the ways to reduce the risks of using it is to have your drugs tested at a testing service. You can find these throughout the Netherlands. 1NUL1 also has two locations; Goes and Terneuzen. Want to know more about the test service? Click here.
GAMing and/or GAMBLING
Gaming is a fun hobby for many people. But sometimes a lot of gaming leads to problems. When do you speak of problematic gaming or even of a ‘gaming addiction’? Does gaming addiction really exist? How do you recognize it? And what treatments are there?
Gambling is a game of chance in which you bet money or something valuable on an outcome that is unpredictable, but which does give you the chance to win. This can be done in all kinds of games, from games of chance such as lotteries, slot machines or roulette to bets on sports, but also scratch cards for example. Gambling can be fun if you see it as entertainment and set yourself a limit, but it is important to know that the chance of losing is always much greater than the chance of winning.
